Selinunte is one of the major archaeological sites in western Sicily, and it is easy to reach from Mazara del Vallo. The park is very large: temples, the remains of the ancient city, and long stretches of coast. You can walk it, or use the transport available inside the park, which helps if you want to cover more of the area.

In the Stagnone lagoon, Mozia brings together archaeology, landscape and sea. The island holds important traces of the Phoenician presence and is reached by boat from the salt pans. It fits well into a day given over to Marsala and the lagoon.

The old town of Trapani runs between the sea and the harbour, with palaces, churches and streets that carry the town’s history. You can pair it with Erice, with the salt pans, or with a ferry out to the Egadi Islands, depending on how much time you have.

The Doric temple and the theatre sit in a very particular hill landscape. The site covers several areas and rewards a slow day, possibly combined with other places inland.

Scopello and the Zingaro reserve give you one of the best-known stretches of coast in western Sicily: coves, footpaths and views over the Mediterranean. The old tonnara at Scopello adds a piece of history to a day that would otherwise be all sea.

San Vito Lo Capo is known above all for its big beach and the coastal landscape. A short way off, Macari offers different views and some of the best places to watch the sun go down.

Western Sicily does not end with the best-known places. Between Mazara, Marsala, Trapani and the interior there are hill towns, nature reserves, archaeological sites, wineries, beaches and small places that can fit an itinerary depending on the season and on what interests you.
