Sandro grew up on this street, so what follows is not a guidebook: it is where we actually go. Mazara del Vallo sits on the western tip of Sicily, with one of the biggest fishing fleets in the Mediterranean, an Arab-Norman old town you can walk end to end, and some of the clearest water on the island a few minutes away.
The sea and the beaches
The sea is 43 metres from the door — the beach in front is the city beach, fine for a quick dip. For clear water and pale sand the best is Tonnarella, about eight minutes by car, and there are quieter stretches beyond it worth the drive.

The Arab-Norman heart of Mazara is a three-minute walk: the Kasbah with its painted tiles and narrow lanes, the squares, and the Museo del Satiro Danzante, home to one of the most famous Greek bronzes in the world, five minutes away.
Food and the fish market
Mazara lands its fish every day, and the market is worth the early alarm even if you are not buying. Ask us where we eat — fresh fish, traditional Sicilian plates, and the right place for a drink at sunset.
Day trips across western Sicily
Selinunte’s temples, the salt pans and wine of Marsala, medieval Erice, Trapani and the Egadi Islands are all within reach. For the region a car helps; in Mazara itself everything is a short walk.
